Berat, Albania: “The city of a thousand windows”
Berat, Albania was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 for its rare examples of Ottoman period architecture. Driving into the city from Tirana, it was stunning to see all these little houses on the hills coming into view. Now we understand why Berat is nicknamed “the city of a thousand windows.” This place of only about 71,000 people captured our hearts, especially the family who runs the Hotel Belgrade Mangalem where we (regrettably) allotted just one night. Next time we’ll budget for at least two.
